Falling trees pose significant risks to life and property, especially during severe weather events or as trees age and decay. Soil erosion, high winds, and structural weakening increase the likelihood of tree failure, yet homeowners often remain unaware until it’s too late. Andy Papathanassiou, the creator of Arbor Alert, sought to address this problem with an affordable and accessible solution for early detection of tree instability, ensuring safety without sacrificing the emotional connection people have with their trees.
Solution Overview
Oxit collaborated with Andy to bring Arbor Alert from concept to prototype. The solution integrates:
- Tilt Sensors: Monitor a tree’s movement and position, alerting users to changes that signal potential collapse.
- Mobile and Web Applications: Provide real-time data visualization, alerts, and historical movement logs through an intuitive interface.
- Weather Integration: Incorporates a weather API to track conditions like wind speed, temperature, and lightning, giving context to tree movement.
- Alarm System: An in-home alarm coupled with a flashing light ensures users are notified of significant risks even during sleep or absence.
Oxit also developed a dashboard for tree service companies to remotely monitor tree health and stability, offering a valuable business application for professional arborists.
