In an effort to improve emergency responses in high density, low-income communities, the Kenyan Red Cross has begun utilizing an electronic 911 system that immediately notifies the proper emergency channels to the location of any emergency. This humanitarian effort responds directly to the lack of infrastructure in artificial or even temporary neighborhoods. Often, few roads or basic dwellings within these targeted areas make it difficult for traditional methods of emergency response to be aware of an emergency in time to save lives, much less access the emergency’s location.
Red Cross volunteers install the E911 devices directly into homes that will then be connected to a central information hub. This allows local emergency services to visualize and map an efficient route to the location of the emergency. E911 improves response time, meaning the very real difference of life and death for hundreds of vulnerable people and allows authorities to localize incidents more effectively.
